Guggenheim third grader Lian Pines decided to do something especially generous to get ready to go back to school. She donated her waist-length hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

Through the American Cancer Society, Pantene has donated roughly 24,000 real-hair wigs to cancer patients across the country. “Healthy hair means a lot to us, and the appearance of healthy hair means so much to women battling cancer,” a spokeswoman said. “Many of the women we help say that putting on a wig makes them feel like themselves again.”

It takes from 8 to 15 ponytail donations to make one wig. Lian said she was a little nervous about the haircut and her new look, but is happy that her hair will make someone else feel beautiful.
