Port Washington Girl Scout Troop 425 got a chance to learn about dogs being rescued right here in Port Washington.

Susan Love and Jeff Stevens of the Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue (SGRR), along with eight of their rescued dogs, met with the troop at the Manorhaven Dog Park. The girls got a chance to play with the dogs and then learned more about SGRR.

SGRR is located in Port Washington and is a nonprofit organization that rescues golden retrievers and golden retriever mixes. The rescued dogs get the veterinary care they need and SGRR finds them foster homes until they are ready to be adopted.

Because SGRR does not have a shelter, they rely solely on foster homes to try to create more opportunities to save dogs’ lives.GirlScouts052516A Girlscouts052516B Girlscouts952516C

The girls learned how these dogs were neglected and sometimes found on the street or taken away from people who abused them. They talked about proper care of animals and the girls got to feed the dogs.

Two Girl Scouts in the troop were very nervous about the dogs, but by the end of the meeting, they fed and bonded with them.

The troop was so impressed by the work that SGRR is doing that they decided to “give back” by donating money they earned from Girl Scout cookie sales.
