Port Washington is a unique place on Long Island where so many in the community feel real pride in Port. For those who feel that way about Port’s lovely peninsula, consider entering the “My Favorite Place in Port Washington is” writing contest. The essay can focus on a favorite store, park, school, neighborhood or other location in Port Washington. Entries are due by Sept. 10.
Prose and poems will be judged for pride in Port content and originality. Selections will be made by the Pride in Port Writing Contest Committee. Winners will be selected in each of the following divisions: grades five and under, grades six through eight, grades nine through 12 and adult (School grade is as of Sept. 5).
Winning pieces will be distributed at the Pride in Port dinner dance and in local media. Winners will be invited to march in the Pride in Port Parade and will receive a Certificate of Achievement along with a gift card from a local business.
Additional submission and judging guidelines for the Pride in Port 2018 “My Favorite Place in Port Washington is” writing contest include entrant must live, work or attend school in Port Washington; prose or poems of 500 words or less will be considered for prizes; entries must be postmarked no later than Sept. 10; on the back of the paper, or on a separate piece of paper stapled to essay or poem, include entrant’s name, Port Washington address, daytime phone number and email address and for children’s submissions, add school grade as of September 2018 and school name (do not put name on the front of essay or poem); mail entry to 2018 Essay/Poetry Contest, Pride In Port, PO Box 1144, Port Washington NY 11050; it is strongly preferred that entries be typewritten (computer or typewriter), but neatly printed submissions on lined paper will be accepted; and receipt will only be acknowledged if a self-addressed, stamped envelope or postcard is submitted with the essay.
Pride in Port is full of activities celebrating Port Washington’s wonderful community pride on Saturday, Sept. 29. The day kicks off with a parade from Main Street to Campus Drive and continues with Family Fun Day and a senior citizen luncheon. A Schreiber High School football game, Hall of Fame induction and Pride in Port dinner dance round out the day.
