Police Salute Port Girl Scouts

portGirl Scouts Julia Gurlitz, Gianna Guzzo, and Rebecca Muratore from Troop 410 were awarded citations for their Silver Badge Project in community service during the Police Commissioners meeting.

The girls sponsored a contest at Weber Middle School. Each home base was invited to come up with a snappy slogan supporting the police district’s “Be S.M.A.R.T., Drive Safely” campaign. A group of adults chose the winning slogan, “One Call Could Wreck It All.”

In making the presentation to the girls, Commissioner Dave Franklin thanked them for supporting the Port Washington safety campaign.

He also thanked Port Washington resident Steve Kaplan for his assistance in converting the slogan into banners, which will hang all over Port Washington.

“Steve is a dedicated asset to our community,” said Franklin.

It is hoped that the colorful banners, along with the bumper stickers already seen on cars throughout Port, will raise public awareness of the dangers of texting while driving and walking.

Commissioner James Duncan credited Franklin for his vision of enlisting the young people of Port to promote safe driving habits.

In other business during the meeting, Commissioner Angela Lawlor Mullens thanked the crossing guards “who keep our children safe throughout the year. They are out there in all weather and we appreciate their dedication to protecting our children.”
